The secret to becoming a copywriter

Hello Reader—

I worked as a freelance and in-house copywriter for over a decade.

I wrote copy about business software and financial products.

Not sexy… but it paid well.

Copywriting involves writing words that sell products and services. It pays more than freelance writing. You can earn six figures a year, too.

Common Copywriting Mistakes

Don't make these common copywriting mistakes!

Effective copywriting is a skill, learn from the best.

I didn’t just do it for the money, though. Copywriting taught me valuable lessons for writing online.

Great copywriters spend their days doing things that aren’t writing, e.g., researching products, talking to customers, and trying odd products and services.

I once spent a week trying accounting software so I could understand the product and write about it.

Great copy is specific, clear, and commercially driven. It uses everyday language that the reader or prospect understands.

And it invokes emotions.

If you want to become a copywriter and you’re looking for a traditional course… you’re out of luck

Few great copywriting courses exist. A beginner can start by reading. The best copywriting books to pick up are:

  1. The Copywriters Handbook by Bob Bly
  2. The Boron Letters by Gary Halbert
  3. The Adweek Copywriting Handbook by Joseph Sugarman
  4. Breakthrough Advertising by Eugene Schwartz
  5. The Ultimate Sales Letter by Dan Kennedy

As useful as these books are, reading copywriting books is a good way to procrastinate. Instead, learn in the wild!

After you’ve watched that, let me tell you about…

A big mistake new copywriters make:

They worry too much about niche selection.

Sure, profitable copywriters focus on one or two niches.

If you must know, popular niches that pay well include finance, health, B2B, personal development, and tech.

But…

It’s hard to break into these niches without experience and testimonials from past clients.

Instead, try a few different projects. Pick a few clients. Work across niches.

Don’t worry too much about your rates… for now.

Instead, accumulate skills and insights into different industries.

This method will also help you understand market rates, where to find work, and what type of clients suit your skills. Then, when you feel comfortable, go deeper into one niche.

That’s what I did.

I eventually quit my job as an in-house copywriter. But I still use the skills I picked up to write about my products and services. And I use some copywriityng principles to create social media content.

Copywriting is a leverage skill. Every online writer should study it.
