How I got paid to write blog posts

Hello Reader—

Forbes paid me to write a column for two years.

I wrote blog post after blog post about productivity and leadership.

Each post averaged 600–800 words.

I spent two hours researching, writing, editing, and publishing each blog post.

To keep my commission…

They tasked me with writing at least seven posts a month.

And for all my column ideas turned blog posts?

I got paid $500 a month.

That’s about $7 an hour.

Or 10 cents a word.

(Forbes sometimes paid a small bonus if a post went viral)

After two years, a Forbes editor rang me.

He said they were killing my column.

At first, I was annoyed.

Hundreds of hours of work... GONE!

But then, I was relieved.

$7 an hour was hardly quit my day job money, which paid quite a bit more.

I got social proof by writing for Forbes…

But I didn’t need to keep banging my head against the wall.

These days, I still write blog posts for my site.

I sometimes write articles on Medium like this one and get paid for that, too.

But I don’t write these posts for money.

(At least, not directly…)

I write to articulate ideas in public… and build relationships with you.

Look:

Earning a living writing blog posts is a grind.

And it’s harder than ever now, thanks to AI.

That said, I don’t want to leave you hanging.

Dozens of websites will pay you to create blog posts today.

Here’s a mega list.

I also recommend using a service like Writers Work.

It contains lots of paying writing gigs for wannabe bloggers and freelancers.

But my honest take?

Use these resources IF you need a few bucks FAST.

Then, reframe blogging to connect with readers and practice in public.

To get paid what you’re worth, don’t just write blog posts for someone else:

Do your own thing.

Creating an offer for your audience.

A course.

Coaching.

A paid newsletter.

They’re all more lucrative than any column or part-time blogging gig.

If you want to take freelance writing more seriously, consider joining The Successful Writer’s Club.

It contains dozens of resources for getting paid to write.

I’m about to relaunch and update the club, so get in while it’s cheap!
