How to write your author bio
|
Hi Reader, I’ve spent the past few weeks reading up on personal branding. Every writer and author needs a good bio paired with a great headshot. But what should your bio say? When writing on social media, like X, LinkedIn or Medium... Keep it short. One line will do. After all, people are reading your posts on mobile devices. They don’t need an essay. Write in the first person. Explain what’s in it for them. Use this framework: “I help X achieve Y through Z.” Here’s what I came up with: “I’ll help you develop the skills and confidence you need to write online 👋“ For Amazon or your author website, go longer. Use social proof. Switch to the third person. Don’t confuse a bio with a backstory, though. 100-200 words is enough. Here’s Dan Brown’s: “Dan Brown is the author of numerous #1 bestselling novels, including The Da Vinci Code, which has become one of the best-selling novels of all time as well as the subject of intellectual debate among readers and scholars. Brown’s novels are published in 56 languages around the world with over 200 million copies in print.” Of course, there’s more to becoming an author than writing a bio. But your bio is a snapshot of what you write and who you write for. Keep it up to date. If you still need help, this post has more tips.
