Adding personality to what you write online (with template)

Hi Reader,

When I first started writing online, I worried about what friends and family would think if they read my work.

What if I wrote about sex or money?!

I published one boring post after the next, and…

Crickets.

One day, I logged into my web stats.

The numbers were depressing.

I realized my biggest problem wasn’t the reaction of a boss, parent, spouse, or friend.

I needed to attract the attention of an ideal reader.

The best way to get their attention?

Using personal stories.

When I started using personal stories, I grew an audience.

Anyone can do it.

If you want to write online…

Write these stories as if you’re telling them to a friend.

Telling stories takes practice.

It’s harder than writing generic how-to content.

And you can’t write an authentic story with ChatGPT, either.

Need help?

Here’s a good storytelling prompt that can help:

“And after doing X ___ for Y _____ and achieving/failing to achieve Z___ I realized_____”.

When using this prompt, pick one story.

Think of it as a nice constraint. It’s much easier to tell a best friend a story.

Don’t worry too much about grammar or big ideas. Your friend doesn’t care about that.

The realization part of your story should offer a takeaway for readers.

A painful lesson.

Something you’d do differently next time.

What do you recommend to someone who wants to follow your path?

Leave out this realization, and you will read more like a journal entry than a practical piece of online writing.

After writing your story, remove 10%.

Cut the first few lines.

Delete any pointless adverbs and adjectives. And simplify big words.

Remember, brevity breeds clarity!

Telling stories and pressing publish early and often is key to finding success writing online.

If I can do it, so you you.
