Fun side hustles for writers

Hi Reader,

I didn’t quit my job to write full-time until I had turned not one but two side hustles into reliable income streams.

My first side hustle?

Freelancing.

I freelanced as a copywriter for Irish businesses and websites.

Some months I’d earn more than my full-time job.

Other months, I didn’t earn much.

I knew I couldn’t rely on a yo-yo income from freelancing writing alone.

(That said, Writers Work makes it easier to land freelance jobs today.)

So, I also started a second side hustle.

Writing and self-publishing books on Amazon.

I spent hundreds of hours writing, self-publishing and promoting my books.

Looking back, that wasn’t the easiest or best side hustle to start. But I don’t regret it.

Writing books is a great credibility builder.

It helped me grow an audience.

And it’s fun.

If you want to write on the side, here are 3 more fun side hustles for writers.

You can easily earn a few K a month from any of these.

And they don’t require working 40, 50 and 60 hour weeks, either.

1 Start a paid newsletter

It’s easier than ever to launch a paid newsletter.

All you need?

A good topic.

An ideal reader.

A willingness to write and publish short daily emails.

Beehiiv, Substack and ConvertKit all enable paid newsletters and landing sponsors.

2 Offer coaching and consulting

Coaching and consulting are good side hustles. You likely have some experiences and ideas that you take for granted.

Turn those experiences into content.

Publish that content on LinkedIn… or where your ideal client spends their time.

Then, explain how connections can work with you to achieve the same results.

3 Ghostwriting

Chances are you take expressing yourself through the written word for granted.

To others, that skill is either a mystery or something that takes them waaaaay too long to learn.

Business owners will gladly pay you to write and create content on their behalf.

All you have to do is pitch.

Next week I’m hosting a workshop for Pro Writers only. I’ll walk you through my writing business strategies in detail, sharing what worked, what didn’t work, and what strategy I’d employ today.

You can buy a ticket below.

Write on,

Bryan Collins
