Day X: Are you Netflix or Disney?
|
Hi Reader, I was a spotty teenage film nerd in the mid-1990s. I’d order DVDs from Netflix using my parent’s account. I’d watch the Terminator 2 or Cruel Intentions. And then post the DVD back to Netflix. What a weird way to consume content! Netflix knew what was coming, even if we didn’t. So they switched from rentals to… Streaming. And? They almost went out of business. In the early 2000s, you see, Netflix wasn’t a content farm. I’d log into the app and my laptop… and find NOTHING TO WATCH. That’s not an exaggeration. Netflix didn’t just lack high-quality content. They had NO content! Then came the financial crisis. The big players… Disney and Sony. They needed money. So, they agreed to license top-shelf films and series to the streamer in exchange for much-needed cash. We know what happened next. Today, Netflix is the world’s biggest TV service, with 247 million subscribers. Disney is still playing catch-up. Sure, they’ve 150 million subscribers now. But they paid dearly for it. The other night… The Netflix algo said my wife and I would like Griselda. I didn’t even know about the show till it popped up. It’s like the Netflix AI knows us… all too well. It’s kind of like using AI to write. The bigger content creators know what’s coming. They’re changing their entire business model to use AI. They’re turning crisis (AI) into opportunity (content). I’ll leave you with this question: Do you want to be Netflix or Disney?
