3 ways you can help clients

Hi Reader,

I spent the past year working with clients of all types. I worked with freelancers, authors, content creators, solopreneurs and business owners.

It’s possible to help clients in three different ways. Sometimes, I’ll switch between these roles.

The Mentor

A mentor leads from the front. They have a map and know the land their client is stepping onto. They can show their clients what works and what doesn’t work. They want their client to succeed.

For example, they could say to a client…

“I earned an extra $10,000 this month by running workshops. I will show you how I did it and what I’d do differently next time. Then, we’ll chat about how this could work for your business.”

The Coach

Next up is a coach. A coach doesn’t always offer prescriptive advice. Instead, they ask clients questions and help them find the answers inside their heads. They’ll help them overcome mental roadblocks.

For example, they could ask a client:

“Who do you want to work with?” and “That’s interesting, tell me more about that.”

The Consultant

Finally, a consultant gives practical answers based on their experience. They’re less concerned with emotions and mindset. Instead, they explain the specifics about how to accomplish X with Y, as quickly as possible.

In my corporate life, we spent thousands hiring consultants every month because they had a particular skill set or could solve a problem quickly and easily.

A consultant might say:

“Here are the exact steps you need to follow to attract 1000 leads this month.” and “The content in your emails isn’t working. Here’s what you need to do…”

When working with clients, you can easily switch between all three roles. It depends on what your clients need in the moment, and how you can help.

Three guides, but one destination.
