Hello Reader—
“What social media network should I write on?”
A writer asked me that question the other day.
Writers can pick from platforms like LinkedIn, Medium, X, Substack, Quora, and Threads.
I started writing online years ago... on Tumblr of all places.
I wrote a technology blog about gadgets (long since dead).
Over the years, I’ve tried other platforms with varying degrees of success.
Medium is a nice place to write.
Grow an account, and you can earn a few hundred dollars each month.
The reach and engagement on LinkedIn are crushing other networks right now.
Lots of writers kill it on X.
I’ve gained traction on X, but it’s much harder there versus other networks.
I tried Substack for a while...
I stopped when I realized growing one email list on my site and another on Substack didn’t make sense.
Threads is the new, sexy network from Zucks.
It’s like X, except without the bots and trolls.
How long it stays that way is anyone’s guess.
Meta has a long history of throttling its reach and turning its networks into pay-for-play platforms.
I’ve enjoyed the most success writing on my WordPress blog.
Writing on your site isn’t easy, though.
So, where to start?
Pick one network (not Tumblr!).
Ideally, it’s one you like using... and where your audience reads content.
Spend three months writing for that network.
Three months sounds like a lot, but it’s long enough to determine the specifics of your choice and what content formats work.
Track key stats like reach, engagement, and profile views each week.
Identify what types of content work best.
Use this information to improve.
After three months, review your choice.
You’ll spot trends and discover if the network is the best place to write content and connect with others.
