I don't have time to create content
|
Hi Reader, A new content creator told me the other day, “I don’t have time to create content. I’m working a full-time day job that pays the bills.” Who has time to create hours of content every day for LinkedIn, X, Medium, a blog, a newsletter, Facebook, Pinterest… I know I don’t. I value running a lean business. I’ve three kids, from 6-18. And I’m training for a triathlon in October. And yet, I’m convinced creating and publishing content online is a simple but cost-effective way to grow a business. I spent 90–120 minutes creating content each week. I also spend 30 minutes adding a few assets into my Creative Vault. All that is more than doable if you have a full-time day job. (Just watch two fewer Netflix episodes!) Time invested in content depends on what I’m promoting and whatever else is going on at home. When I’ve got a good run at the week, I’ll create something involved like a YouTube video, a series of emails, and a paid workshop. And when I’m stuck for time, I’ll dig into my Creative Vault and find high-performing content from several months ago. Last week, I spent 0 hours creating content because I took a few days off to go away with friends to a festival. But, I still published my daily newsletter and wrote on a few key social channels. And I generated thousands of impressions and a few dozen new email subs. So what’s inside my vault? Usually, a high-performing piece of content that attracted a lot of engagement, drove a few leads and/ or converted some into clients. I rank and categorize these assets by performance and objective. When I pull an old one out, I spruce it up by revising the hook or clarifying the key idea. Then, I load them into Buffer and schedule content for the week. With a few tweaks, I can even repurpose these older pieces of content for a few channels. You shouldn’t spend all day creating content. And you certainly don’t need to quit a full-time job to create content, either. A Creative Vault will grow your business or brand even when you can’t.
