I spent a weekend reading Google’s massive guide to prompt engineering. I also geeked out for hours watching interviews and tutorials from boffins at Anthropic, the team behind Claude. My biggest takeaway? Tech bro founders called it “engineering” to gatekeep their AI secrets. Developers like using fancy term “prompt engineering” to describe what they do because that’s how they see the world. You and I see the world differently. We think about words, not code. And that last word “engineering,” puts us non-coders off as it sounds techy and complicated. The kind of job we’d need a computer science degree for. Prompt engineering and prompt writing describe the same job. If you can write…you can write or engineer a great prompt for Claude or ChatGPT. All you need is the right framework and an understanding of how these AI tools work. That’s why your writing skills are more valuable than any coding degree right now. You already know how to articulate a great idea. Think of it this way… Nobody calls following a recipe “food engineering.” You’re simply providing ingredients and instructions in the right order. Great prompts are like recipes - specific ingredients (context, examples, constraints) combined in the right sequence to produce delicious results.
