My daily habit for craft and cash flow

I divide my workday into two different modes.

I’ll explain why in a moment…

Last week, I surveyed newsletter readers. Respondents submitted variations of this theme: being consistent.

One reader said:

I want to reach a point where I am consistent with both the business side and the creative side of writing. Did the balance come to you naturally? How did you get to the place where such things as sudden algorithm changes weren’t major derailments in your writing and business?"

Finding time to create and also get paid can feel overwhelming. That’s why I work like as follows:

MONK MODE (Morning):

  • 90 minutes of uninterrupted creative work
  • No calls, no Zoom meetings
  • Phone in another room on Do Not Disturb
  • Social media blockers active (I use Freedom)

MERCHANT MODE (Afternoons):

  • Client work
  • Meetings
  • Workshops
  • Social media
  • Offer creation and sales

By structuring my day like this, I’ve time for creative work in the morning and business-y work in the afternoon.

Perhaps you’ve more commitments, like a full-time job? Or maybe you don’t work with clients?

Well, do one thing for your craft every day and one thing that pays the bills every day.

I treat writing like a practice, not a production line, and I don’t chase algorithms or vanity metrics.

And I’m still amazed by what 30 minutes of daily writing can accomplish. Over 18 months, I’ve written 150,000+ words for my newsletter. That’s 2–3 books worth!

When I have extra time, I repurpose newsletter content for my socials, but the foundation is always that 30-minute daily habit.

Then, follow that up with something that’ll build your brand or business e.g., pitching clients, setting up a sales page, or an ad.

You can do this too. Open your notes app. Set a timer. Write about one client problem you solved this week.

Add an offer.

Hit send.

Habits need accountability to stick. That’s why I’m considering creating a 30-day challenge where we implement this system together—daily check-ins, troubleshooting obstacles, and celebrating those compound creative gains. I’ll only do it if enough people sign up.

If you’re interested, reply with the word “CHALLENGE”
